Building character, confidence, and community one shift at a time
Author: Laird Comber
Some of the most rewarding moments in life don't happen in a boardroom or at the gym. They happen at the rink. You can feel it in the smell of cold ice, the sound of blades carving tight turns, and the unmistakable energy of a team ready to give all they’ve got.
Coaching the Etobicoke Dolphins U18BB team has been an incredible experience. It’s a role that holds profound personal meaning.
Building Character Beyond a Scoreboard
Youth hockey isn’t just about wins and losses. The numbers on the scoreboard are not the most important thing. Every practice, team meeting, and high-stakes game is a unique opportunity to help young athletes build confidence and develop resilience. They learn what it truly means to be part of a team.
Watching players grow and transform over the course of a season is the best part of the job. At the U18 level, these young women are at a critical juncture in their lives. They are constantly balancing school pressures, part-time jobs, and athletic ambitions.
Seeing them step onto the ice with confidence is inspiring. They gain trust in their own skills. They support one another through tough shifts and difficult losses. They wholeheartedly celebrate each other’s success. This is what youth sports should always be about.
The lessons learned here extend far beyond the arena boards. Players learn discipline, accountability, teamwork, and perseverance. These foundational values will stay with them long after their time playing hockey is over. They will carry these traits in their personal lives, education, and future careers.
It Takes a Village On and Off the Ice
A successful hockey season is never a solo effort. I am so grateful that I get to coach with a group of dedicated fellow Coaches, a phenomenal GM and many selfless volunteers. We are backed by supportive parents who invest so much of their time, energy, and resources. They work hard to create a positive environment for these athletes.
It takes an entire community to help people succeed. Parents tackle early morning drives to distant weekend tournaments. Volunteers manage equipment, schedules, and logistics behind the scenes. This strong network of support creates a culture where the players feel valued, heard, and motivated to push their limits.
Leadership as a Shared Experience
Coaching is ultimately a reciprocal experience. It continuously challenges me to grow with the players. As a coach, I learn just as much from these players as I teach them.
Dealing with a tough game presents challenges. Facing adversity on the ice tests our resolve. Open locker-room discussions require honesty. These moments are a constant reminder of what real leadership looks like. It is not about control or authority. True coaching involves encouraging others. It requires staying calm under pressure and communicating effectively. The goal is to help every individual become the best version of themselves, both on and off the ice.
I'm incredibly proud to be part of the Etobicoke Dolphins family. I am excited to continue supporting this outstanding group of young women. They are maturing from talented hockey players into confident, resilient, empathetic, and driven leaders. Watching that growth is the ultimate reward. I look forward to every opportunity to guide, mentor, and cheer them on as they play the sport they love and step boldly into bright futures.
